Free Mp3 Compressor

I've been looking around for a free mp3 compressor that have a
graphical user interface. But i couldn't find a free one.

End up i created one myself, using LAME.
Don't expect much of it as this was actually meant for MY personal use.

As of 23 January 2008,
the program can :

+ Compress music (duh)
+ Allows you to select the bitrate
+ Compress multiple mp3 files at one go
+ Lets you select whether to overwrite the existing file or specify another location

the program cannot :
- let you select which encoding mode to use (vbr,cbr,abr)
- preserve id3 tags (after encoding, id3 tags will be gone)

Btw i guess i'm changing the background of the application.
It's rather ugly... hehe!

Changing Default Intallation Dir in XP

Ok i've just installed Windows Xp on My notebook. I reformatted my hard disks as
I wanted to start fresh for the new year. i partition my hdd into 2 partitions.
I would usually install my apps on a seperate partition from the OS partition. So after
configuring my new XP and installing the necessary apps, i found a problem. Each time i install something i have to manually change the installation path. Default was C:\Program Files\.

So i decided to share something.

1)Click Start >> Run (windows key + r)
2)Type regedit and hit Enter
3)Then navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
4)Inside the CurrentVersion folder(double click the folder),
find ProgramFilesDir(double-click this) whose default value is C:\Program Files
5)Change it to any path you want(double click). For example D:\Program Files
6)Restart your pc

I'm not surprised to know that there are quite a number of people out there still
do not know how to differentiate between a virus and a spyware. And because of this,
i shall list down the softwares you will need to install(in order to stay more secure) after installing your WINDOWS operating system.(or after buying a new PC) :P

Anti-Virus Software
This is self-explanatory. I believe everyone already has an antivirus software
already installed. I can say that i see most schools n most people are using norton or products by symantec.

I'm not a fan of Norton. If you want a free and reliable anti virus,
u can choose AVG(Theres a free version)
or my personal favorite, Avast Home Edition.

Avast Home Edition is free. It provides you with the option to run a boot-time scan after you first installed it. For a free antivirus, it even provides real-time protection and also automatic updates when you get online.

ANTI SPYWARE SOFTWARE
Ok this part there are some people who don't even know what's a spyware. Taken

"Spyware is a general term used to describe software that performs certain behaviors such as advertising, collecting personal information, or changing the configuration of your computer, generally without appropriately obtaining your consent first.Spyware is often associated with software that displays advertisements (called adware) or software that tracks personal or sensitive information. FIREWALL SOFTWARE
Basically a firewall is to prevent unauthorized inbound and outbound access from an to your PC. There are alot of free and even paid firewall softwares available.
For a free basic firewall, i prefer Filseclab Personal Firewall Professional Edition.

With all these, you are more protected from more internet threats.
But bear in mind though, there are always weaknesses in everything on this earth.

Hotmail With its Problems

I've been a Hotmail user for a few years now. But recently, Hotmail just suck.
There are times when i cant download my attachments. And there are also times
when im supposed to receive an email from a friend but i didnt receive any.
And just a few minutes ago i logged in to http://www.hotmail.com/ and was irritated!

Here is the screenshot of why i get frustrated and irritated.

Im using Internet Explorer 7 at that time. Tried refreshing the page ALOT of time.
I didnt bother to use the firefox installed on my machine as
recently hotmail have given me some problems.

For those of you who plan to buy Windows Xp Media Center Edition (released a few years back),or XP MCE 2005 or want the Vista ultimate edition (mayb because you wanted the media center) or buying a media center application, DONT waste your money.

Intalling Vista with Ubuntu 7.04 already installed

Ok. So i have Ubuntu 7.04 and Windows Xp already installed.
So i did a fresh install of Vista on the xp partition.
After install, the Grub bootloader will be gone. Meaning you can only
boot Windows Vista and not Ubuntu.

Lets restore the grub bootloader. Get ready your Ubuntu Live CD.

1) Boot the ubuntu disc.
2) Go into terminal
$sudo grub
grub$ root(hd0,
You should see a list of partitions. Note the partion number of ubuntu(ext2fs filesystem) and Vista partition(unknown partition, type 0x07)
grub$root (hd0,2) Where 2 is the partition number of ubuntu
grub$setup (hd0)
grub$quit
3)Reboot your com.
4)Load the already-installed Ubuntu and go to terminal
$sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
A text editor shall pop up
5)At the bottom of the text editor add in :
title Microsoft Windows Vista
root (hd0,0) #where the second '0' is the vista partition number
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1
6) When you reboot you should see vista on the grub

Getting My Hands on Vista

Vista has already been released for sometime now. And lately i've been using Ubuntu instead of Windows XP. Lol. I'm not anti-Microsoft. It's just that i like things cheap and good. And also, i would like to learn more things. So now i'm finally going to get Windows Vista from my school.
It's Windows Vista Business Edition.

Instead of doing an upgrade from XP, i guess i'll be doing a fresh install of Vista. And i do have Ubuntu 7.04 already installed on my machine. I'll back up my data first and after the vista install, i'll try to reinstall the Grub bootloader.

If everything is successful, i'll post some information here or mayb a short how-to.

This is just a short tutorial on installing Virtual Box on Ubuntu.

Introduction :
Virtual Box allows you to install another operating system like Microsoft Windows XP or openSUSE on the current operating system that you are running without the need to repartition your hard disk (in order to install another operating system).

Before We Begin...
Download Virtual Box from http://www.virtualbox.org/.

Lets Start :
Double Click on the package you downloaded to install it.
Click on the black arrow next to "Terminal"

After Installing Virtual Box :
1. From Ubuntu's menu, bring up the "Users and Groups" manager: System > Administration > Users and Groups.
2. Click the "Manage Groups" button.
3. Scroll down to "vboxusers", select it, and click the "Properties" button.
4. In the "Group Members" list, check the check-box next to your user account name.
5. Click the "OK" button.
6. Click the "Close" button on the "Group Settings" window.
7. Click the "Close" button on the "User Settings" window.
8. Logout, to finalize the "User and Group" settings: System > Quit > Log Out.

After loggin back in, you may now run Virtual Box: Applications > System Tools > InnoTek VirtualBox.

Play multimedia files using MCI and C#

Multimedia can enhance the graphical user interface and the presentation of your application. It is very important that you application is visual appealing to your user, but while not making your application difficult to work with. You can use a sound file to notify a user of an event, or a video file demonstrating what the user must do next. I have wrapped most of the common MCI multimedia command in a class file. This will make it easier for you to use MCI in your applications.

Media Control Interface (MCI)

The Media Control Interface (MCI) provides standard commands for playing multimedia devices and recording multimedia resource files. These commands are a generic interface to nearly every kind of multimedia device. MCI provides applications with device-independent capabilities for controlling audio and visual peripherals. Your application can use MCI to control any supported multimedia device, including waveform-audio devices, MIDI sequencers, CD audio devices, and digital-video (video playback) devices.

mciSendString

The mciSendString function sends a command string to an MCI device. The device that the command is sent to is specified in the command string.

First we import the “winmm.dll” so that we can use the mciSendString function that we need.

Audio Problem On openSUSE 10.2

I installed openSUSE 10.2 on my Samsung NP-Q35.
Installation went smoothly.. Just like Ubuntu Feisty(7.04), there's
a high pitch sound coming out of the speakers. Here's what i did :

Log on as root,
Open Kate, (or any other text editor)
Open this file : /etc/modprobe.d/sound
Add the following line :
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-eapd
save.

Open(With text editor also, im usin kate) /etc/modprobe.conf
Add the following line :
options snd-hda-intel index=0 single_cmd=1 model=laptop-eapd

Reboot your machine.

SAMSUNG Q35 Sound problems with Ubuntu 7.04

With the 2.6.20-15-generic kernel you may experience some sound issues.
Go to your Filesystem folder.
Places >> Computer >> Filesystem

then go here : /etc/modprobe.d/options
add this line :
options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1 model=laptop-eapd
save the file.

You must be root(like the Windows Administrator) in order to save the file.
Usually what i did was to open Terminal (Applications >> Accessories >> Terminal)
and type in :
sudo nautilus
it will then ask you for password, type in your password you used to logon to your Ubuntu.
Don't worry if you can't see what you are typing. It's invisible to your eyes.
Click when you finished typing your password.

A File Browser will pop up, usually there will be a link to your Filesystem on the left pane.
Browse to this file /etc/modprobe.d/options and add the line as mentioned above. save.

Dual Boot Windows XP and Ubuntu

Okay, here's what i did to dual boot my Samsung Q35 notebook with XP and Ubuntu. It's quite simple actually. I guess if u have experience installing an OS (Operating System), this should be a piece
of cake. Here goes.....

Requirements :
Windows XP CD (Home/Professional)
Ubuntu CD (I'm using Ubuntu 7.04)
Hard Disk Space (Make sure its enough for both OS and the things you are gonna store on each one)
Your Precious Time (Installing Windows takes some time)

First you have to partition your hard disk. I guess for a start you might want to divide your hard
disk into 2 equally sized partitions.

Format one of the partition to NTFS (I used the first partition) and then install windows XP.
Okay drink some red bull or smoke some sticks now.. As this is gonna take some time...

Once Windows XP finished installing, you might want to go play around with your new windows XP
first, configuring it or whatever...

Now boot with the Ubuntu CD. Wait for it to load.
Select "Start or install Ubuntu". Again,wait for it to load.
Click on "install" on the Ubuntu desktop.
Everything is step-by-step process.

Select "Manually edit partition table" once you come to the partitioning.
Now divide your non-windows partition into 2, one for the swap and one for the installation.
The swap partition do not have to be that big(At least your amount of RAM).
For my notebook i used 1000MB for swap and the rest for the Ubuntu installation.
i used ext2 file system for my ubuntu installation.
Set the mount point of the ext2 partition to "/".
Proceed installing Ubuntu.

Done.

When you installed Windows XP, you automatically have the windows boot loader(NTLDR) written
to your Master Boot Record(MBR) by default.
When we install Ubuntu, we are using a boot loader called GRUB.
During installation, it automatically searches for your Windows XP and
add it to the list.
So when you boot your machine, you'll see the grub
and listed there your Ubuntu and XP.
